Abstract

Background: Lung cancer is one of the cancers with the highest incidence and mortality in the world, and its subtype, non-small cell cancer, is responsible for 85% of cases, expressing itself as a major public health problem. In this context, immunotherapy has been gaining more and more space in the medical sciences as a new treatment option for cancer.
Objective: To understand the dynamics of immunotherapy and its attributes as a viable possibility for alternative or complementary lung cancer treatment.
Methods: An integrative literature review was performed using scientific articles seeking to elucidate questions about the use of immunotherapy in lung cancer treatment.
Results: Immunotherapy shows promise, considerably reducing the neoplastic activity, and improving patient survival, as long as it is used to complement other therapies, such as chemotherapy. However, despite all the advances, it is still not very accessible to oncologic patients.
